Recently, I traveled back home to Indiana and decided to take less clothes, and more lighting gear. I’m always looking to add environmental portraits to my portfolio too, so before heading home I decided to contact some old friends and setup a few photo shoots. This is my favorite image from my time back home. It’s an image of my friend Bobby whose in the bottom right corner posing as turkey hunter.
Bobby owns and maintains the woods for hunting purposes. Which made it really easy to find an environmental location for the shoot. As we walked around the woods catching up, we came across this location. Two summers before, a small tornado tore through this section of the woods and caused the tree to bend like that. The tree really stuck out on an otherwise gloomy day. I didn’t realize it at the time, but the tree helps bring the eye towards Bobby whose hiding in the bottom right corner. The bits of snow, types of trees, and complete flatness of the landscape in this image, screams home and Midwest to me.
